STATISTICS, STATISTICS EVERYWHERE
In our modern world, statistics are everywhere. ey comprise the famous
infographics found in almost any newspaper (but most closely associated
with USA Today). When we purchase a car, we look at its “stats.” How
much horsepower does it have? Is the gas mileage acceptable? Kids (and
many adults) regularly absorb the numbers underlying that most statisti-
cal of games: baseball.
ough we are familiar with statistics, we oen fail to absorb its intri-
cacies. Statistics may be intended to describe surface phenomena or
to dig into an underlying relationship. ey may be used to inform or
