INTRODUCTION
Scores of books are available on the Internet and IP. We will not rehash this information, but will use this chapter to examine those aspects of the Internet and IP that are pertinent to route discovery.
The focus of the first part of the chapter is on several protocols and routing tools that are used in conjunction with the routing protocols discussed in the following chapters. These protocols and routing tools are discussed in this order, and the reader can pick-and-choose according to your experience level: (a) Media Access Control protocols (MAC), (b) Logical Link Control (LLC) protocol, (c) routing tables, and (d) the Internet Protocol (IP).
