TIMER ADJUSTMENTS
Most high-end routers can be configured to vary the frequency of RIP routing updates and other parameters. Also, Cisco runs a set of timers for its overall on demand routing (ODR) operations for RIP. These RIP configuration parameters are available to the network manager:
Time interval between updates (update): Default value for update is 30 seconds.
Interval of time after which the route is declared invalid (invalid): This interval should be three times the value of update. This means a route becomes invalid if the route is not refreshed with the updates. This inaccessible route then enters holddown. It can still be used for packet forwarding. The default value for invalid is 180 seconds.
