STATIC ROUTES, DEFAULT ROUTES, AND STUBS
Static routes are those that are manually configured. See Figure 3-3. They are entered into the router (or bridge) tables with configuration commands. A network is not required to have any other routes than static routes.

Some implementations do not provide an alternative static route if the primary route fails. But others do, and they are effective for certain situations. One attraction is that they do not require the running of a routing protocol, and thus do not consume resources for advertising and routing table maintenance.
