OSPF is the preferred routing protocol for large interior routing domains. It uses link state metrics and spanning trees to compute the route. OSPF is very aware of its use of bandwidth vis-à-vis user traffic, and executes several procedures to reduce flooding, and the containment of its advertisement packets.
In theory, OSPF can support dynamic metrics, such as delay. In practice, its metrics are more modest and pragmatic, such as a hop-count value, and the link speed (interface bandwidth). OSPF represents the culmination of many years of research and practice on how to build a routing protocol.
