OSPF's operations vary, depending upon the type of network in which it operates. Its behavior is slightly different if it is on a point-to-point network, a broadcast network, and multicast network and so on. For this discussion (see Figure 6-3), we will examine the overall operations of OSPF that pertain to all network types.

OSPF implements a hello protocol. It is a handshaking protocol that enables the routers to learn about each other, exchange information, and later perform pings with neighbor routers to make certain the link and/or router is up.
