RIP runs over UDP, so its messages are encapsulated into UDP segments and it runs on a well-known port (number 520). Two versions of RIP are available: RIP-1 and RIP-2. Figure 5-4 shows the message formats for both versions.
The command field can contain the values of 1 to 6, but 1 and 2 are the only formal (documented) values. A command code = 1 identifies a request message, and a value = 2 identifies a reply. The version field is 1 or 2 for the two versions.
