2017 might have been defined by IRS scams as many US citizens fell for these well-orchestrated attacks. According to CNN, the ringleader behind all of these IRS scams was a 24-year-old Indian man, Sagar Thakkar. He had established call centers that he used to swindle millions of dollars from Americans. The charges that Thakkar is facing include extortion, cheating, impersonation, and conspiracy. This is one of the most successful social engineering attacks that the US has ever witnessed. He used a common fear of the Americans, the burden of filing tax returns. Let us keenly look at how Thakkar and other attackers were social engineering unsuspecting targets and see the pretexting principles that they used.
