Examining SharePoint 2010 Migration Paths
Although the SharePoint migration tools seem to enable only two types of migrations, there are actually several different approaches to migration that can be considered, depending on the needs of the environment. Some of the migration options enable migration to new hardware, whereas others reduce the risk of a migration approach by using multiple servers and migrating site by site.
