When you start any WebLogic Server instance, the instance transitions through several distinct “states.” In most cases, you issue just the simple start command, which brings the instance to a RUNNING state, where it is ready to accept requests. However, it is possible to bring up the server instance to a state that's not quite in the RUNNING mode.
For you to clearly understand the various states a server instance can transition through or stay at, I break the various states into two different groups and discuss them in the next two sections.
