Customizing Forms

Like it or not, everything you do says something about your business—even the business forms you use. For a small company or someone with desperately bad taste, the built-in QuickBooks invoices and other forms work just fine. But if you want business forms that convey your sense of style and attention to detail, customized forms are the way to go.

In QuickBooks, form customization comes in two levels:

  • Customizing what's already there. When you have a form to work with, you can quickly format text and numbers as well as change whether or not fields appear in the form. For example, you can turn off the company name and address to create an invoice that prints on your company letterhead. The Customize dialog box, which opens when you edit any template, contains everything you need for these types of changes.

  • Laying out and designing a form. With the Layout Designer, you can design a form from scratch, adding fields, laying them out where you want, and formatting them as you please. For example, you can resize and reposition fields to emphasize the balance due. The Layout Designer works just as well for redesigning existing templates or adding fields that you forgot.

Editing an Existing Form

The easiest way to build your own forms is to start with a template that QuickBooks provides or use another customized template that you've put together. Whether you plan to make minor adjustment or wholesale revisions, you won't have to start from scratch. Here're the steps ...
