Registering QuickBooks

The Register QuickBooks Pro 2005 dialog box doesn't appear until the first time you open a company file with the new version of the program. If you choose to create a company file, the EasyStep Interview walks you through the entire process without a whisper about registration. But when you open the file you've just created, you'll see the Register QuickBooks Pro 2005 dialog box. And although you've purchased QuickBooks, the program runs only 15 times unless you register your copy.

Click Begin Registration. The registration tool connects to the Intuit registration database via the Internet. The next step depends on whether you've already registered this copy of QuickBooks:

  • If you've registered the copy of the software before, the QuickBooks Online Registration tool asks you to confirm the last four digits of your telephone number and your postal code. For example, if you installed QuickBooks on a computer whose hard drive has since gone to heaven, you don't have to re-register the program when you install it on a new hard drive.

  • If you've never registered this copy of the program, you must answer a few questions about your company, which Intuit uses later to display messages about other products and services that they'd like to sell to you. For example, if you use a payroll service other than QuickBooks, you're sure to see an advertisement for payroll services. Click Next. The program opens a Web browser for registration.
