With the exception of PDFs created from Illustrator with the Preserve PDF Editing Capabilities option selected, it’s rarely a good idea to open and edit PDF files in Illustrator. Even though Illustrator is willing to give it a try, you run the risk of causing damage to the file integrity, especially when the PDF has been generated by non-Adobe applications.
If a PDF contains very simple content—say, just a vector logo—you may be successful editing the file in Illustrator. But if you attempt to edit a file containing a font not available on your system, you won’t be able to edit any text, and the file will not image correctly since font substitution will be take place.
