Creating, Saving, and Opening a Custom Stencil

Creating custom Stencils to fit your drawing needs is a helpful way to capture the most frequently used Shape Masters and existing images. Stencil files can also be opened with Visio Template files to ease the opening of stencils with a new drawing diagram.

In addition to the new stencil feature, Visio can quickly generate a temporary Document Stencil of the shapes used on the current drawing document. This is a convenient way to capture all current shapes to reuse in a new stencil file.

The Document Stencil cannot be placed in Edit Mode, nor can it be saved, although shapes and icons can be edited. To generate a Document Stencil, follow this process:
