Leaves of absence may harm your career prospects.
Michael Judiesch and Karen Lyness tracked the progress of nearly 12,000 managers at a financial services corporation in order to understand the career impact of taking leaves of absence. Of the managers surveyed, 523 took a leave of absence (around 90 per cent of these managers were female – most likely this was because of maternity leave) over a two-year period, with absences ranging in duration from a median of two months to a maximum of 18 months.
