In one of the earliest attempts to quantify the phenomenon known as the ‘planning fallacy’ – a term coined by the behavioural economists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky – undergraduate psychology students were asked how long it would take them to complete their honours theses. The mean estimate for completion time was 33.9 days, yet the eventual average completion time was 55.5 days. In fact, only 30 per cent of students finished their theses in their estimated time.
