Let’s set some expectations. “True” 3D software (such as Cinema 4D, Maya, or Blender) can create just about anything imaginable in a fully fleshed-out, three-dimensional interface. After Effects’ 3D capability is affectionately referred to as “2.5D,” since it’s not nearly as robust as the software mentioned above.
That said, After Effects is great at 3D-ifying 2D assets, in which 2D objects can be positioned like postcards in 3D space, creating the illusion of depth. Activating 3D also enables lights, cameras, and a plethora of other advanced features.
