The process of strangling the monolith is to identify parts of the monolith that can be extracted as a microservice. Chapter 7, Microservices and Worker Applications, shall describe this in further detail in terms of defining a microservice. Once a candidate Microservice is identified, it is extracted as a new microservice and a new anti-corruption layer is introduced to provide communication with the monolith. Figure 4 shows this in action:
