This was not part of the original 12-factor principles. The concept introduces the concept of the Application Programming Interface (API) First approach to an application design. Design of the application begins at the seams that define a contract on what and how other applications would interact with your application. This defines the purpose, resulting in an application that is independent, unique and easily understood in its ecosystem. It is only then that the application is implemented to this contract.
