In the original 12 principles, this was entitled Configuration. The principle requires that an application's configuration is externalized to environment variables. This enables an application to be configurable without the need to modify a release. This is especially useful in automating the build-release process. Credential and code were included in the 15 principles to provide a clear demarcation of credentials and configuration from code. There should be no hard-coded credentials and no configuration in the code. These should be externalized for the purposes of configurability and to ensure sensitive information is not revealed should the source code be made public deliberately or accidentally.
