Asynchronous operations, for the OSB API, represent a way in which long-running operations such as provision, deprovision, and update are non-blocking. The result is that an incomplete response is returned, usually with the response code 202 Accepted. This allows the platform to complete the request operation and provide some timely feedback that would allow a user to perform other functions. Contrast this to a synchronous operation; the platform would be blocked waiting for a response and the user would have to wait for the completion before they can do something else.
