244 CHAPTER 8 Design of experiments: a key to innovation in nanotechnology

In order to obtain unbiased estimator of effects, the number of runs must be equal

to the number of factor effects to be estimated plus one. However, in a situation, that

the insignicant factors are not of interest, estimating all main effects may not be

useful if it is only the detection of a few important factors that is important. If the

number of active factors is small compared to the number of runs, the careful use of

biased estimates will still make it possible to identify signicant factors.
