5.1 INTRODUCTION
Iijima [1], using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM),
showed the connection between CNTs and the carbon fullerenes of Nobel Laureate
H. Kroto [5]. It was revealed that CNTs were conjoined and concentrically nested
graphene cylinders of varying lengths and ultrahigh-aspect ratio (>10,000). Since
then there has been extensive research into the properties, synthesis, and possible
myriad applications of CNTs.
