7.1 Introduction: Background

In 1973, Dennis Gioia became Ford Motor Co.’s eld recall coordinator. He was in

charge of the operational coordination of all the recall campaigns currently underway

and also in charge of tracking incoming information to identify developing prob-

lems. Gioia’s responsibility included viewing les containing eld reports of alleged

component failure that had led to accidents. He is now chair of the Department

of Management and Organization and the Robert & Judith Klein Professor of

Management in the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University.
