Research on supply chain management tends to focus on the relationship be -
tween a supplier and a manufacturer, or perhaps in a supplier–manufacturer–
customer triad. While such research is tightly controlled and allows developing an
understanding of the impact of various factors, it ignores the complexity of actual
supply chains. is is particularly important in the context of product safety, where
a safety issue in any link of a supply chain can have devastating consequences for
both consumers and the brand owner. Our case research looks at supply chains from
