Locus of control (Weiner’s attribution theory)

The more we believe we can control events affecting us, the better we can make choices for the benefit of ourselves and others.

The big picture

Bernard Weiner of UCLA developed a model to explain how we perceive our successes and failures in terms of what we believe caused them. To what extent do you feel in control of your fate? For example, if you fail an exam, you might complain that you had too little sleep the night before, that the examiner set questions that were not in the syllabus you studied, that you were unlucky on the day in the choice of questions available, that you didn’t know enough about the topic, that your family had done nothing to support you educationally.
