PART SEVEN
Self-awareness
Since the publication of psychologist Daniel Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence* in the mid-1990s, leaders and managers have been encouraged to develop their emotional intelligence as a key set of skills in understanding and working with others. The cornerstone of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. If you know yourself well and you can determine the differences between your own and others’ approaches to work, then you can more easily choose the best ways of working with others by seeing the world from their perspective as you lead or manage them. It all starts with you.
