1.3. Total System Resource Perspective

To understand performance management, it is necessary to understand the various system resources that interact to affect the overall performance of the system. Traditionally, system administrators viewed performance as the interaction of three system resources: central processing unit, memory, and I/O. Figure 1-1 shows this view. The Central Processing Unit, or CPU, is the hardware that executes the program codes, which exist as one or more processes.
