4.4. Summary
It is impossible to carry out performance management unless system performance can be measured. Measuring system performance requires some method of instrumentation. Software instrumentation is the most practical method for measuring system performance, even though it is invasive to the operating system; that is, it will often affect the performance of the system being measured. The amount of effect is called the overhead of the measurement. The smaller the overhead of the measurement, the more accurate it will be.
