Metrics can be categorized by their scope within the system being measured. They can also be viewed from the perspective of the type of data they provide.
Instrumentation in the kernel provides metrics that fall into several categories:
Global performance metrics
Per-process performance metrics
Application performance metrics
Subsystem metrics
Process profile metrics
Within each of these categories, data from the major kernel subsystems may be available. This data may include CPU utilization metrics, virtual memory utilization metrics, disk utilization metrics, network utilization metrics, and kernel resource utilization metrics.
