Application optimization is an important activity before and during application development and when performance problems arise. Knowledge of the operating system is necessary so that decisions can be made about selecting various system services. Compiler optimization features can be used to improve application performance in certain circumstances. Profiling tools can be used to determine where an application is spending its time. Databases, for instance, may include tools that provide information that can be used to tune the application to improve performance.
