So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
6.6. I/O Performance Issues
I/O performance is affected by the following factors:
System bus speed
I/O backplane bandwidth
Number of I/O backplanes
Number of host adapters
Host adapter speed
I/O throughput is itself constrained by the speed of the system Main Bus, to which the CPU, memory and I/O backplanes are usually attached. I/O throughput is limited by the “weakest link” in the chain of components.
Backplane bandwidth is determined by the hardware design. This includes the length of the backplane, width (number of parallel lines), the speed of components, and the protocol employed in accessing the backplane. Hardware designers constantly strive to improve backplane bandwidth.
