A tidy script is always well-received for maintenance, governance, version control, and debugging purposes. Scripts can be organized by using sections and control statements.
I like to organize my script into compartments. A part of the script will set variables, another part of the script will load data, another part will transform it, and so on. Control statements make it a lot easier to debug scripts in case of errors.
Using subroutines is, in my opinion, necessary and highly recommended.
