There are several ways to add new icons to the desktop. As discussed in Chapter 5, “Working with the Gnome Desktop Environment,” you can simply drag items from the Gnome File Manager and onto the desktop. Dragging with the left mouse button will move the item from its current location to the desktop. Dragging with the middle mouse button will give you a menu of options, asking you what action you wish to perform. You can use the “Link” option to create a symlink, which is virtually identical to a shortcut icon in Windows. Figure 6.1 shows an example of a symlink. The arrow in the lower-right corner indicates that the item is a symlink.
