Network Components
We will be examining the various hardware components found in any network, so that you will have a working understanding of everything necessary to build a network of your own. The first topic to cover, because it's the component closest to the FreeBSD machine itself, is the cables.

The benefit of Ethernet and other LAN link types is that for very low cost, traffic can be carried between machines within a network at speeds that only the most expensive WAN links can reach: 10Mbps for “standard” Ethernet, 100Mbps for an enhanced and now nearly universally accepted variant (Fast Ethernet), and 1Gbps for the newest standard, Gigabit Ethernet.
