So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Whether you choose to operate your FreeBSD system through the X-Windows GUI or not, the facts of life are that you're going to have to deal with a shell, particularly as an administrator. A shell gives you all the flexibility you need to accomplish even the most complex tasks, but meanwhile dictates a user experience that's arcane at best. In this chapter, we'll make ourselves at home in the shell, comfortable enough to use it as a programming environment and “captain's chair” as well as a user interface.
