I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Gathering Needed Information
After you have signed up with an ISP, you will need to get several pieces of information:
The communications port that your modem is on. If you know the DOS com port, the following FreeBSD devices correspond to the DOS com ports: COM1: cuaa0, COM2: cuaa1, COM3: cuaa2, COM4: cuaa3.
The IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers. These are used to resolve domain names to numerical IP addresses.
Your ISP's dial-up phone number.
Your user name and password.
The type of authentication that your ISP uses. This should be either a standard shell login, PAP (password authentication protocol), or CHAP (challenge handshake protocol). More on the different authentication protocols will be covered later in the chapter.
