Exchange Server 2007 databases (also called mailbox stores) consist of a single file that has an .edb extension. The database file holds everything related to a user’s mailbox, including e-mail messages, voice mail messages, faxes, Message Application Programming Interface (MAPI) content, attachments, and more. Exchange Server 2007 no longer relies on the streaming (.stm) file to hold non-MAPI content. Exchange Server databases are stored in an Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) database format. (ESE is discussed later in this chapter.)
