One area that has seen significant improvement in Exchange Server 2007 is indexing and searching. In fact, these functions have been rewritten from the ground up. Exchange Server 2007 now uses the same search/indexing engine as SQL Server 2005.
In previous versions of Exchange Server, the information store was periodically scanned and an index was simultaneously updated. However, this crawl method was slow, rarely current, and used up significant server resources. In fact, the indexing service in Exchange Server 2003 is initially disabled as a way to help boost system performance.
Under Exchange Server 2007, the following changes have been made:
Indexing is automatically enabled on all new mailbox stores.
