iOS 5 has made great enhancements to push notifications, including a new Notifications Center. It’s where an app sends you a notification without it actually having to be running in the foreground. For example, the CNN app can pop up a message when there is a breaking news story; the Facebook app can alert you when someone just tagged you in a photo; the Google Voice app can let you know that you just received a message; etc. You can choose to get a Sound, a Badge, a Banner, an Alert, or any combination of those, or turn it off altogether.
