iOS 5 brings a new feature to Messages called iMessage. When iMessage is on (it is by default and is found on the Messages screen), your Messages app will automatically detect if you’re sending a text or picture message to another iOS 5 user and send it via iMessage instead of your cellular carrier’s SMS system. The main benefit here is that iMessages don’t count against your SMS/text message plan, especially if you’re on a limited one.
