If you want to make a call, your iPhone has to be active and there has to be a cellular network in range. Your carrier’s name should be displayed in the upper-left corner, along with your current signal strength. If you’re roaming on another provider’s network, you should see that network’s name. If you don’t see a network name or you see No Service, then you will not be able to make calls until you are back in the range of a wireless carrier.
