How it works...

The bridging function works using a bridge instance that runs on an ESXi host where the DLR control VM runs. The bridging function runs inside the ESXi kernel; the DLR control VM is purely used to determine on which ESXi host a bridging instance is active. When the active DLR Control VM is moved to another ESXi host or taken over by the standby DLR control VM, the bridging function is also moved to the other ESXi host and a RARP is sent to update devices on both VXLAN and VLAN networks. The NSX Controller does not participate in software-based layer 2 bridging. The following diagram shows software-based bridging components and how they work:
