How it works...
Upon adding the hardware VTEP gateway into VMware NSX, the NSX controller will advertise the list of RSNs that the hardware VTEP gateway will leverage for BUM traffic. BUM traffic originating from the hardware VTEP gateway is load balanced across multiple RSNs for replication. BUM traffic originating from an ESXi host will leverage the normal NSX replication mode (Unicast, Hybrid, or Multicast) and won't leverage RSN.
If an RSN failed, the hardware VTEP gateway will remove the failed RSN from its list to avoid black-holing the BUM traffic and leverage the BFD sessions to protect the RSNs, as shown in the following diagram:
