Establishing and following a defined process (such as in Figure6.4 and
Table6.3) is critically necessary for project success. Project sponsors and
their peers often want to shortcut the process, for example, of carefully
defining in advance a problem statement and objectives, or in defining in
advance what is in and out of scope in a project. Or, because they typi-
cally are unfamiliar with which internal and external units are involved with
the value stream, they leave critical participants off the list of those to be
involved in the project.
