By adopting a similar multifaceted approach to estimation and cost projection, IT managers can establish a methodology that will promote the creation of more reliable budgets. For an IT shop that is fairly immature with respect to budget practices, this approach won’t move mountains overnight. But it will provide a framework to use in developing a manageable, repeatable, and improvable budgeting process. Here, then, are seven tips for producing more effective budgets that IT managers may wish to include in their own framework. For a picture of how these seven might fit together in an overall budgeting process, see Figure 8-1.
