Case in Point: Agilys
Agilys is a value-added reseller (VAR) for midrange IBM computers used in the hospitality industries. The company pairs a home-grown property management system with these boxes and sells them to hotels, resorts, and office complexes. In 2002, Agilys was engaged in a major upgrading of its mainline property management system, moving it to a thin-client, SOA-based architecture. Although it was a significant effort in terms of manpower, the company considered this to be a relatively simple technical exercise—after all, it just involved rewriting an already existing system.
