Runtime Architecture

Architecturally, WAS V5 is considerably different from prior versions of WebSphere Application Server, though readers familiar with earlier versions of WAS will notice that WebSphere Application Server V5 bears a passing resemblance to the WAS V4.0 AE Single Server (AEs) edition. The key difference in WAS V5 from earlier versions is that the application server is designed to be a standalone process not dependent on other processes for administration or configuration information. This design provides improved fault tolerance and runtime performance. Figure 5-1 depicts the WAS V5 application server architecture as well as its interactions with the most common client types.
