The GI Generation

Between 1905 and 1924, there were 56.6 million live births in the United States. Immigration augmented this population. By the end of this twenty-year period, 13.8 million people had come here from Europe, bringing the total to 70.4 million. This generation “peaked” in volume around 1921. (In other words, the largest number of GI-Generation births in one year occurred in 1921.) The GI Generation is defined by the Great Depression and its participation in World War II. Only a few of these folks—fewer than five million women and men—are still “in the parade.”

The GI Generation is the oldest living generation in the United States. This is significant because this generation amassed enormous personal wealth—nearly $11 trillion. ...
