When I was in high school and college I had a difficult time meeting girls. I don’t know why, but I always felt awkward just walking up to girls whom I didn’t know and engaging them in conversation. Some guys were good at it, but not me. Most of the time, I just admired them from a distance. My college roommate, Chuck Jamieson, who was from Hawaii, was a natural. He could approach any girl any time, and in no time Chuck and the girl would be old friends. I stuck close to Chuck, but the skill did not rub off. We would practice opening lines like, “Don’t I know you?” or, “So, are you from around here?” or, “Do you come here often?” But nothing ever really worked for me.
